FAQs

Quick answers to the questions we hear most.

Getting started
How much rooftop space do I need?

Roughly 100 sq ft of shadow-free roof per kW. A 3 kW home system needs about 300 sq ft; a 100 kW factory system about 10,000 sq ft.

How much electricity will my system generate?

In North India, about 4–4.5 units per kW per day on average — roughly 120 units per kW per month, varying with season, tilt and shade.

What size system do I need?

Divide your average monthly units by about 120 to get the approximate kW required. We confirm this with a site survey and your last 12 months of bills.

How long does installation take?

A home system is installed in 1–3 days. Commercial systems take 2–8 weeks depending on size. Net-metering approval by the DISCOM can add a few weeks.

Subsidy & policy
Is there a government subsidy for home solar?

Yes. Under PM Surya Ghar, residential systems get ₹30,000/kW up to 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW — a maximum of ₹78,000. RWAs/GHS get ₹18,000/kW for common facilities. Some states, like Delhi, add their own subsidy.

Do I need DCR panels?

DCR (Indian cell + module) panels are required for subsidy-linked, government and PM-KUSUM projects, and for net-metering/open-access projects from 1 January 2027. We advise on the right choice for your project.

Is there a subsidy for commercial or industrial solar?

No central capital subsidy, but businesses can benefit from accelerated depreciation, lower tariffs through open access, and zero-investment / RESCO models.

What is net-metering?

A bi-directional meter records units you export and import. Exported solar units are adjusted against units you draw from the grid, so you pay only the net.

Finance & models
What is the difference between CAPEX, RESCO and zero investment?

CAPEX: you buy and own the plant. RESCO/PPA: a developer owns it and you pay per unit at a lower tariff. Zero investment: no upfront payment, you pay a solar tariff for a few years and then own the plant.

What is the payback period?

Typically 3–5 years for homes after subsidy and 3–5 years for commercial/industrial CAPEX projects, depending on tariff and usage.

Can I set up a solar plant away from my premises?

Yes. Through open access in Haryana and many other states, a plant can be built elsewhere and the power wheeled to your premises on payment of regulated charges.

Technology & maintenance
Will solar work during a power cut?

On-grid systems shut down during outages for safety. For backup, choose a hybrid system with batteries.

How long do panels last?

Panels carry 25–30 year performance warranties; inverters typically 5–10 years, extendable.

How much maintenance is needed?

Periodic cleaning (every 1–2 weeks in dusty areas) and an annual check-up. IG Solar offers comprehensive O&M with remote monitoring.

Which brands do you use?

Modules from Waaree, Adani, Pahal, Goldi, RPSG Solvanta and Aroma Solar; inverters from Delta, Hitachi Energy, Statcon Energiaa, Eastman, Deye, Sungrow and Huawei; batteries from leading Indian and global brands.
